Introduction to the School of Earth Science

The School of GeoScience, formerly known as the Department of Petroleum Exploration of Northeast Petroleum Institute, is one of the leading departments founded at the beginning of its establishment in 1960. It was renamed as the Department of Petroleum Exploration of Daqing Petroleum Institute in 1975, the School of GeoScience of Daqing Petroleum Institute in 2001, and the School of GeoScience of Northeast Petroleum University in 2010.

The school has five teaching and scientific research institutions (Department of Resources Exploration Engineering, Department of Exploration Technology and Engineering, Department of Geology, Institute of Oil and Gas Resources Exploration and Application, and Geoscience Experiment Center) and two management institutions (School Office and Student Working Group). The school has first-class discipline points (provincial key disciplines) authorized for doctor's degree in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, post-doctoral research service station, three doctor's degree authorization stations (Mineral Survey and Exploration, Geological Engineering, Earth Exploration, and Information Technology), and six master's degree authorization stations (Mineral Survey and Exploration, Geological Engineering, Earth Exploration, and Information Technology, Geology, Geochemistry, and Geophysics), two provincial leading talent echelons (Mineral Survey and Exploration, Geological Engineering).

The school has 115 in-service staff, including 104 full-time teachers and 11 management personnel, including 39 with senior titles and 41 with old deputy titles. There are 76 teachers with doctoral degrees, 17 teachers with overseas visiting experience, 19 doctoral supervisors, and 65 master supervisors. It has one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two experts with special allowances of the State Council, and one outstanding talent in the Ministry of Education's new century. There are three distinguished professors of Longjiang scholars, one young scholar, three winners of Heilongjiang Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, two leaders of Heilongjiang provincial leading talent echelon, four reserve leaders, two experts of Heilongjiang provincial government subsidies, one famous teacher of Heilongjiang Province, one excellent teacher of Heilongjiang Province, 1 model teacher of Heilongjiang Province, and the "May Day Labor Medal" of Heilongjiang Province, one winner of Sun Yueqi Youth Science and technology award, one young academic backbone of provincial universities, four excellent CNPC teachers, 10 top ten teachers at the school level, and four excellent teaching quality awards at the school level. In addition, there is one double employed academician, four distinguished professors, three part-time professors, and four visiting professors.

The college has two scientific and technological innovation teams of provincial universities (Oil and Gas Accumulation and Preservation, Fault Deformation Sealing and Fluid Migration), one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education (Continental Shale Oil and Gas Accumulation and Efficient Development), one national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by the Ministry of Education (Unconventional Oil and Gas Accumulation and Development), and one Provincial Key Laboratory (Oil and Gas Accumulation Mechanism and Resource Evaluation) and 3 CNPC key laboratories (Fault Reservoir Control, Gas Preservation, and Destruction Mechanism, Oil and Gas Geochemistry). It has 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (national teaching experiment demonstration center of petroleum engineering and geology), one national off-campus practical education base for college students (national science practical education base in Liujiang Basin, Hebei Province), and two provincial teaching teams (excellent tutor team of postgraduates of oil and gas reservoir formation group and teaching team of resource exploration engineering), one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center (oil and gas resource exploration), one provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching center (Oil and Gas Reservoir Formation and Exploration), and one graduate innovation practice platform (Petroleum Geology). In addition, there are seven joint postgraduate training and innovative practice bases, including the geological field practice around Xingcheng and Songliao basins in Liaoning Province, the production practice teaching base of Daqing Oilfield, and the Research Institute of China Petroleum Exploration and Development and the Research Institute of Oriental Geophysical Company. The School of Geosciences is one of the most potent and characteristic colleges of Northeast Petroleum University.

In construction and development, the college has constantly carried out international cooperation and exchanges to strengthen talent training. The college has held six large-scale international and domestic academic conferences in the past five years, with 40 overseas participants. Fourteen well-known foreign experts and professors have been specially invited, including 12 lectures and reports. Seventeen young teachers have been sent to internationally renowned universities and scientific research institutions for overseas visits and exchanges, including Imperial College London, UK. University of Western Australia, Texas A & M University, Pennsylvania State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Calgary and Regina in Canada, Uppsala University in Sweden, Leoben University of Mining and Technology in Austria, Auckland University in New Zealand, etc. Through foreign exchanges and visits, cooperative training has been established with visiting institutions. The postgraduate training mechanism cooperates to train an average of 3-6 doctoral and master's postgraduates every year.

In the past five years, the school has undertaken 75 national science and technology projects and 59 provincial and ministerial science and technology projects, with a total scientific research fund of 200 million yuan. It has won the one-second prize in the national science and Technology Progress awards and 26 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. In the past five years, it has published 425 scientific and technological papers, including more than 100 SCI and EI records; published 15 monographs and teaching materials; and been authorized 26 invention patents.

After several generations of explorers' joint efforts, the School of Geosciences has become the cradle of China's training of advanced talents in the field of resource exploration. Facing the future, the school of Geosciences will take the socialist ideology of Xi Jinping's new era with Chinese characteristics as its guide, fully implement the spirit of the First Party Congress, and strive to write "Qianglu-Tuohai-Zhuangxin" three great articles, explore and innovate, forge ahead, and strive to create a more brilliant tomorrow!
