Introduction to theSchool of Petroleum Engineering

School of Petroleum Engineering is one of the earliest established departments of Northeast Petroleum University. It was founded in 1960, and the late international famous scholar and the domestic elder statesman in the petroleum industry, Professor Zhou Shiyao, served as the first head of the department. It was renamed as Department of Petroleum Development, Department of Petroleum Engineering, and in 2001, School of Petroleum Engineering. Thanks to the over 60 years of ongoing efforts of several generations of the school faculties, the school has become an essential base of talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation for the upstream oil and gas fields in China. The school has successfully cultivated more than 20,000 undergraduates, masters, and doctors, making significant contributions to our motherland's petroleum industry and socialist modernization.

School of Petroleum Engineering sets up one national key primary discipline- Oil and Gas Engineering and four national critical secondary disciplines- Oil and Gas, Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Development Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, and offshore oil Gas Engineering. Oil and Gas Engineering is always in the top 3 in the National University Discipline Evaluation, and in 2018, it was selected to the Heilongjiang Province First-class Discipline Construction Sequence. Its engineering has maintained the top 1% of World Essential Science Indicators (ESI) since 2016. The school has a doctor's degree authorization center of Oil and Gas Development Engineering, the academic master's degree authorization centers of Oil and Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, and Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering, and professional master's degree authorization centers of Resources and Environment discipline (subclass of Oil and Gas Engineering), and a Post-Doctoral Scientific Research Service Station of Oil and Gas Engineering. The school has three undergraduate majors: Petroleum Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, and Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering. Petroleum Engineering is recognized as the characteristic national major, national first-class undergraduate major, and engineering education certification major. The Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering is recognized as the distinct national major, Heilongjiang Province first-class undergraduate major, and the engineering education certification major. Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering is recognized as the Heilongjiang Province first-class undergraduate major.

School of Petroleum Engineering currently has 140 faculties, including 41 doctoral supervisors, 46 professors, and 52 associate professors. The faculty members include 3 double employed academicians, 1 New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education, 1 Prominent Educator of Heilongjiang Province, 6 experts enjoying the special government allowance of the State Council, and 1 member of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the State Council. There are 1703 undergraduates, 705 postgraduates (including 189 doctoral students and 516 master students), and 23 international students. The school comprises Oil and Gas Well Engineering Department, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering Department, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering Department, Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering Department, Experimental Center, EOR Research Institute, and School Office. Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering and the EOR Research Institute are established based on the Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering Department and the EOR Research Institute.

Regarding education and teaching, the School of Petroleum Engineering has a national experimental teaching demonstration center of "Petroleum Engineering and Geology," a national virtual simulation testing teaching center, and a national engineering practice education center of "Oil and Gas Engineering." The school has cultivated a state-level teaching group, 2 excellent national courses, 1 national quality resource sharing courses, 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, 2 Heilongjiang Province virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and won a series of teaching awards, including the second prize of the National Teaching Award, the first prize of Heilongjiang Province Higher Education Teaching Award, and the first prize of Heilongjiang Province Textbook Construction Award. The school also won many honorary titles such as the "Advanced Collective of Ethics and Ethos of Heilongjiang Province."

In respect of scientific research and social services, focusing on the secondary disciplines of Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering, Oil and Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, and Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering, the School of Petroleum Engineering has formed unique characteristics and advantages in the aspects of EOR mechanism and technology, oil and gas percolation mechanism and reservoir description technology, special good drilling and reservoir stimulation technology, oil and gas storage and transportation system optimization & energy conservation and consumption reduction technology, and offshore oil and gas high-efficient production theory and technology. The school is equipped with 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 National Energy Research and Development Center, 1 National Engineering Experimental Research Center, 1 Cultivation Base of National Key Laboratories jointly built by province and ministry, 4 critical laboratories in Heilongjiang Province, and other research platforms. The school has 2 Heilongjiang Province University Scientific and Technology Innovation Teams, 3 Heilongjiang Province Leading Talent Echelons of "535 Project", and 1 Heilongjiang Province "Leading Goose" Team. In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 100 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the major projects and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and the Major National Oil and Gas Projects, developed long-term cooperation with large oilfield enterprises in technical services, technical consultation, and achievement transformation, and supported the successful development of major engineering projects regarding increasing oil reserves and supporting sustainable oil production. The average annual scientific research fund exceeds 50 million yuan. The school successively won 1 special prize of the National Science and Technology Award, 3-second prizes of the National Science and Technology Award, 2-second prizes of the National Technology Invention Award, and more than 50 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards. The school takes advantage of the discipline's cutting-edge technologies, actively uses the Continuing Education platform to cultivate and train technicians, and continuously supports the human resources for the oil and gas industry and regional economic development.

School of Petroleum Engineering has always emphasized domestic and global exchanges, established long-term cooperation with many foreign universities, research institutes, and enterprises, promoted scientific research cooperation, scholarly communication, and joint training of postgraduates. Many faculties serve at international organizations and academic journals. Additionally, the school establishes the student branch of "SPE Northeast Petroleum University," constantly expanding its international and domestic influences.
