Research Institute

The Unconventional Oil and Gas Research Institute was established in 2017 with the overall goal of building the institute into a base for theoretical innovation, technology research and development, talent training, production-education-research-application integration, international cooperation, and exchange research and achievement transformation in the field of unconventional oil and gas exploration and development in China.

The institute has 7 unconventional oil and gas experiment centers. They are the shale oil and gas geological engineering integration research center, source rock in-situ conversion mining and digital core collaborative simulation center, unconventional oil and gas geophysics research center, unconventional reservoir fracture reformation and completion research center, unconventional research center for high-efficiency development of oil and gas, research center for carbon dioxide geological storage and gas storage construction, and the unconventional oil and gas experimental center. They are mainly dedicated to basic theoretical research, supporting technology and equipment research and development in the fields of shale oil and gas, tight sandstone oil and gas, coalbed methane, volcanic oil and gas, carbonate rock oil and gas, natural gas hydrate and geothermal. Based on major oilfields across the country, through undertaking and participating in the National 973 Project, National Oil and Gas Major Projects, National Natural Science Foundation, Provincial Funds, international cooperation, and oilfield research projects. A complete series has been formed from basic theoretical research to oilfield application technology, which has made new contributions to the stable and high-yield development of the old oilfields in the east and the efficient development of the oilfields in the west, especially the implementation of the strategy of building a century-old oilfield in Daqing.

The institute currently has 36 faculty members, including 25 full-time teachers, 6 part-time teachers, and 3 guest professors. There are nine doctoral supervisors, eight professors, and seven associate professors. There are 3 "Longjiang Scholars," 2 provincial outstanding youth winners, 2 provincial scientific and technological innovation leaders, 2 provincial exceptional graduate tutors, and 1 provincial scientific and technological innovation team. All of them have built a talent echelon with a reasonable structure and have formed a multidisciplinary team of experts combining geology and engineering.

The institute relies on the national first-level key discipline of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and the provincial first-level key discipline of Geological Resources and Geological Engineering. It has joined the National Engineering Laboratory of Efficient Drilling and Rock Breaking Technology, the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Oil and Gas Recovery of the Ministry of Education, the National Petroleum Engineering and Geology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the national oil and gas field development teaching team. It has established joint laboratories with PetroChina Daqing Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute, Shenyang Geological Survey Center of China Geological Survey, etc., to research "Palaeo-sedimentary Environment Reconstruction and Organic Matter Enrichment Mechanism", "Tight Reservoir Characterization and Storage Mechanism", "Extraordinary Occurrence Status and Microscopic Characterization of Organic Matter in Regulated Reservoirs", "Unconventional Reservoir Geophysical Prediction", "Unconventional Oil and Gas Logging Identification and Quantitative Evaluation", "Non-linear Seepage Theory", "Water Drive Mechanism in Low Permeability Reservoirs" ", "Geothermal Resource Exploration and Development and Utilization", "Digital Core and Simulation" and other fields , which have formed distinctive features and advantages.

The Institute will be guided by primary national oil and gas strategic needs and the frontiers of unconventional oil and gas geology and engineering integration, focusing on the three key points of application: essential theory leadership, key technology breakthroughs, and leading discipline development, and carrying out application foundation and forward-looking standard technology research and application results, gathering and training outstanding talents, promoting the integration of production, education, and research, and leading and driving the technological innovation of tight oil and shale oil to build an internationally renowned and domestic first-class research institute.
